Wander into Portree Village

Finding Greenacres is easy — clear roadside signs guide you off the A87. From the door, the walk to Portree takes you past glimpses of the bay and the Cuillin until you reach the village centre. In minutes you can be watching the fishermen landing their boats, joining a boat tour for a wildlife-spotting spin, or heading straight for Ceberfeidh, The Granary or Rosedale Restaurant for a local feast.

Not in the mood for a big meal? Isle of Skye Candles café is five minutes from the door — stone-baked pizza, shelves of handmade candles and gifts that smell like the island in summer. Really. Gorse, Wildflower, Juniper and more. Definitely stop in.

Portree Shops You’ll “Just Pop In” To

Portree is full of the great shops you meander through – perfect for perusing, browsing and inspecting. Carmina Gadelica bookshop stacked with local history. Mackenzie’s bakery sells rolls and doughnuts perfect for tucking into your rucksack. Little craft stores where you “only meant to look” but end up with hand-woven scarves, pottery mugs and local jewellery you simply can’t leave behind.

Evening Fun You Don’t Need to Plan (almost!)

In Summer, you’ll find live music most nights somewhere in town. The Portree Hotel is a good bet — there’s often an accordion in the corner, plus a whisky list that can take you around the island without leaving your seat. The food here is good too, think scottish comfort food, gastropub style, always filling, always followed by sticky toffee pudding and a dram of something smoky. Twenty Minutes, Countless Adventures

Greenacres isn’t just close to Portree — it’s central to the whole island.

North: In under 20 minutes you’re on the Trotternish Ridge, staring at Storr Lochs or walking the path to the Old Man of Storr. Maybe you’ll park up at Kilt Rock Viewpoint or Brother Point peninsula to search for dinosaur footprints on low tide.
East: The Raasay ferry sails from nearby; spend an afternoon touring Raasay Distillery and heading for some food in the distillery restaurant or on to Raasay house. Work up an appetite by climbing Dun Caan on this lesser known equally beautiful wee island. You’ll likely find most of it entirely to yourself.
South: Braes Beach, jutting out from the coast into the sound of Raasay. Rarely crowded, Braes is the kind of place where you bring a book and end up staying for hours, paddling and taking in the views North along the Jurassic coast of Skye.

And when the day’s done, you’re back on the terrace or in the glass-walled conservatory watching the light change over the bay… in just under 20 minutes

Out-of-Town Dining

Because you’re so central, even “remote” Skye gems are in easy reach. Edinbane Inn, with its buzzing pub atmosphere and seasonal menus, is a short trip. You may be lucky to visit on a night of music or on a theme night where you’ll have locally sourced food but reimagined in the style of some far flung delicacy.

Or, for the more discerning traveller, afternoon tea at Greshornish House is like walking into a period drama. From Edinbane, turn off the road onto a winding, sheep-filled single track to the lochside manor house. Miss tea and you can still have dinner and an evening by the fire — not a bad way to end the day.
